Abandonner Dieu ?

Ta propre méchanceté te corrigera, et tes déboires te châtieront. Sache-le donc et vois que c'est une chose mauvaise et amère, que tu as abandonné l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et que ma crainte n'est pas en toi, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées. (Jérémie 2:19)

Je n'exagère pas quand je dis que j'ai vu des centaines de récidivistes revenir, et je leur ai demandé s'ils n'avaient pas trouvé que c'était une chose mauvaise et amère de quitter le Seigneur. Vous ne pouvez pas trouver un vrai récidiviste qui ait connu le Seigneur, mais qui admette que c'est un mal et une chose amère de se détourner de Lui ; et je ne connais pas de verset plus utilisé pour ramener des vagabonds que celui-ci.

Regardez Lot, n'a-t-il pas trouvé cela mauvais et amer ? Il a passé vingt ans à Sodome et ne s'est jamais converti. Les hommes vous auraient dit qu'il était l'un des hommes les plus influents et les plus dignes de tout Sodome. Mais hélas ! hélas ! il a ruiné sa famille. Et il est pitoyable de voir ce vieux récidiviste traverser les rues de Sodome à minuit, après qu'il ait averti ses enfants, et qu'ils lui aient fait la sourde oreille.

Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts. (Jeremiah 2:19)

I do not exaggerate when I say that I have seen hundreds of backsliders come back, and I have asked them if they had not found it an evil and a bitter thing to leave the Lord. You cannot find a real backslider, who has known the Lord, but will admit that it is an evil and a bitter thing to turn away from Him; and I do not know of any one verse more used to bring back wanderers than this very one.

Look at Lot, Did not he find it an evil and a bitter thing? He was twenty years in Sodom and never made a convert. Men would have told you that he was one of the most influential and worthy men in all Sodom. But alas! alas! he ruined his family. And it is a pitiful sight to see that old backslider going through the streets of Sodom at midnight, after he has warned his children, and they have turned a deaf ear to him.
