Un vain but

Car à quoi sert à un homme de gagner le monde entier et de perdre son âme ? (Marc 8:36)

O que nous nous réveillons à la pensée de ce que c'est que d'être perdu ! Le monde a été bercé par Satan, qui va et vient en disant aux gens que cela ne veut rien dire. Je crois au paradis et à l'enfer à l'ancienne. Le Christ est descendu pour nous sauver d'un enfer terrible, et tout homme qui est jeté en enfer à partir de là doit aller en plein dans le feu de l'évangile, et sur le corps mutilé du Fils de Dieu.

Nous entendons parler d'un homme qui a perdu sa santé, nous compatissons avec lui et nous disons que c'est très triste. Notre cœur est attiré par la sympathie. Voici un autre homme qui a perdu sa richesse, et nous disons : "C'est très triste". Voici un autre homme qui a perdu sa réputation, son statut parmi les hommes. "C'est encore plus triste", disons-nous. Nous savons ce que c'est que de perdre sa santé, sa richesse et sa réputation, mais qu'est-ce que la perte de toutes ces choses par rapport à la perte de l'âme ?

O that we would wake up to the thought of what it is to be lost! The world has been rocked to sleep by Satan, who it going up and down telling people that it doesn’t mean anything. I believe in the old-fashioned heaven and hell. Christ came down to save us from a terrible hell, and any man who is cast down to hell from here must go in the full blaze of the gospel, and over the mangled body of the Son of God.

We hear of a man who has lost his health, and we sympathize with him, and we say it is very sad. Our hearts are drawn out to sympathy. Here is another man who has lost his wealth, and we say, “That is very sad.” Here is another man who has lost his reputation, his standing among men. “That is sadder still,” we say. We know what it is to lose health and wealth and reputation, but what is the loss of all these things compared with the loss of the soul?
