Jésus se retourna

Et le Seigneur se retourna, et regarda Pierre. Et Pierre se souvint de la parole du Seigneur, qu'il lui avait dite : Avant que le coq chante, tu me renieras trois fois. Et Pierre sortit et pleura amèrement.

(Luc 22:61-62)

Le Maître aurait pu se retourner et dire à Pierre : "Est-il vrai, Pierre, que tu m'as oublié si tôt ? Ne te souviens-tu pas que lorsque la mère de ta femme est tombée malade d'une fièvre, j'ai réprimandé la maladie et elle l'a quittée ? Ne te souviens-tu pas de ton étonnement devant le courant d'air des poissons, au point de t'exclamer : "Éloigne-toi de moi, car je suis un homme pécheur, ô Seigneur" ?

Te souviens-tu quand, en réponse à ton cri : "Seigneur, sauve-moi ou je péris", j'ai étendu ma main et t'ai empêché de te noyer dans l'eau ? As-tu oublié quand, sur le Mont de la Transfiguration, avec Jacques et Jean, tu m'as dit : "Seigneur, il est bon d'être ici : faisons trois tabernacles".

"As-tu oublié d'être avec moi à la table du souper, et à Gethsémané ? Est-il vrai que vous m'avez oublié si tôt ? Le Seigneur aurait pu le gronder avec des questions comme celles-ci, mais il n'a rien fait de tel. Il a jeté un seul regard sur Pierre, et il y avait tant d'amour en lui que cela a brisé le cœur de ce disciple audacieux, et il est sorti et a pleuré amèrement.

And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny Me thrice. And Peter went out and wept bitterly.

The Master might have turned and said to Peter, “Is it true, Peter, that you have forgotten Me so soon? Do you not remember when your wife’s mother lay sick of a fever that I rebuked the disease and it left her? Do you not call to mind your astonishment at the draught of fishes so that you exclaimed, ‘Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord’?

“Do you remember when in answer to your cry, ‘Lord, save me, or I perish,’ I stretched out My hand and kept you from drowning in the water? Have you forgotten when, on the Mount of Transfiguration, with James and John, you said to me, ‘Lord, it is good to be here: let us make three tabernacles.’

“Have you forgotten being with Me at the supper-table, and in Gethsemane? Is it true that you have forgotten Me so soon?” The Lord might have upbraided him with questions such as these; but He did nothing of the kind. He cast one look on Peter, and there was so much love in it that it broke that bold disciple’s heart, and he went out and wept bitterly.
