La verge de Moise

"Qu'y a-t-il dans ta main ?" (Exode 4:2)

Voici Moïse, un homme faible et solitaire qui descend en Égypte, pour rencontrer un monarque qui a le pouvoir de vie et de mort. Et tout ce qu'il avait pour délivrer le peuple de l'esclavage était cette verge !

Mais voyez comme cette verge est devenue célèbre. Le serviteur de Dieu n'avait qu'à l'allonger, et l'eau du pays se transforma en sang. Il n'avait plus qu'à lever le bâton et les eaux de la mer Rouge se séparèrent, pour que le peuple puisse passer à travers les champs.

Il a levé cette tige et a frappé le rocher de silex, quand l'eau a éclaté, et ils ont bu et se sont rafraîchis. Ce bâton méprisable devint vraiment puissant. Mais ce n'était pas le bâton, c'était le Dieu de Moïse, qui avait condescendu à l'utiliser.

“What is that in thine hand?” (Exodus 4:2)

Here was Moses a weak solitary man going down to Egypt, to meet a monarch who had the power of life and death. And all he had with which to deliver the people from bondage was this rod!

Yet see how famous that rod became. God’s servant had but to stretch it out, and the water of the country was turned into blood. He had only to lift up the rod and the waters of the Red Sea separated, so that the people could pass through dry-shod.

He lifted this rod and struck the flinty rock, when the water burst forth, and they drank and were refreshed. That contemptible rod became mighty indeed. But it was not the rod; it was the God of Moses, who condescended to use it.
