Rester debout

C'est pourquoi, que celui qui pense être debout fasse attention à ne pas tomber. (1 Corinthiens 10:12)

Il y a vingt-cinq ans - et pendant les cinq premières années qui ont suivi ma conversion - je pensais que si j'étais capable de tenir debout pendant vingt ans, je n'avais pas à craindre la chute. Mais plus on s'approche de la Croix, plus la bataille est féroce. Satan vise haut. Il est allé parmi les douze et a choisi le trésorier, Judas Iscariote, et l'apôtre-patriarche, Pierre.

La plupart des hommes qui sont tombés l'ont fait du côté le plus fort de leur caractère. On m'a dit que le seul côté sur lequel on a réussi à les assaillir était celui où les rochers étaient les plus abrupts et où la garnison se croyait en sécurité. Si un homme pense qu'il est assez fort pour résister au mal à un moment donné, il doit y être surveillé de près, car c'est par là que le tentateur arrive.

Twenty-five years ago—and for the first five years after I was converted—I used to think that if I were able to stand for twenty years I need fear no fall. Most men who have fallen have done so on the strongest side of their character. I am told that the only side upon which  was successfully assailed was where the rocks were steepest, and where the garrison thought themselves secure. If any man thinks that he is strong enough to resist the evil at any one point he needs special watch there, for the tempter comes that way.
