Mais Daniel avait décidé en son cœur de ne pas se souiller avec la portion de viande du roi, ni avec le vin qu'il buvait : c'est pourquoi il demanda au prince de l'eunuque de ne pas se souiller. (Daniel 1:8)

Je peux imaginer des hommes disant à Daniel : "Regarde, jeune homme, tu es trop puritain. Ne sois pas trop particulier, n'aie pas trop de scrupules religieux. N'oubliez pas que vous n'êtes pas ici... Vous devrez surmonter ces notions, maintenant que vous êtes ici... Vous n'êtes pas entouré d'amis et de parents. Vous n'êtes plus un prince. Vous avez été démis de vos hautes fonctions. Vous êtes maintenant un captif. Et si le monarque apprend que vous refusez de manger le même genre de viande qu'il mange et de boire le même genre de vin qu'il boit, votre tête va bientôt tomber de vos épaules. Vous feriez mieux d'être un peu politique".

Mais ce jeune homme avait la piété et la religion au fond de son cœur ; et c'est là qu'il faut les mettre ; là où elles vont grandir ; là où elles vont avoir du pouvoir ; là où elles vont réguler la vie. Daniel n'avait pas rejoint la compagnie de quelques fidèles parce qu'il voulait entrer dans la "société", et atteindre une position : c'était à cause de l'amour qu'il avait pour le Seigneur Dieu d'Israel.

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuch: that he might not defile himself. (Daniel 1:8)

I can imagine men saying to Daniel, “Look here, young man, you are too puritanical. Don’t be too particular; don’t have too many religious scruples. Bear in mind you are not now in . You will have to get over these notions, now you are here in . You are not now surrounded by friends and relatives. You are not a  prince now. You have been brought down from your high position. You are now a captive. And if the monarch hears about your refusing to eat the same kind of meat that he eats, and to drink the same kind of wine that he drinks, your head will soon roll from off your shoulders. You had better be a little politic.”

But this young man had piety and religion deep down in his heart; and that is the right place for it; where it will grow; where it will have power; where it will regulate the life. Daniel had not joined the company of the faithful few in  because he wanted to get into “society,” and attain a position: it was because of the love he had toward the Lord God of Israel.
