En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui croit en moi fera aussi les oeuvres que je fais, et il en fera de plus grandes, parce que je vais vers mon Père. (Jean 14:12)

J'avais l'habitude de trébucher sur ce verset, mais plus je vis, plus je suis convaincu qu'il est plus important d'influencer un homme dont la volonté s'oppose à Dieu, de faire en sorte que cette volonté soit brisée et soumise à la volonté de Dieu - ou, en d'autres termes, il est plus important d'avoir un pouvoir sur un homme vivant, pécheur et détestant Dieu, que de ressusciter les morts. Celui qui peut créer un monde peut ramener un homme mort à la vie, mais je pense que le plus grand miracle que ce monde ait jamais vu est celui de la Pentecôte.

Les hommes qui entouraient les apôtres étaient pleins de préjugés, pleins de malice, pleins d'amertume, leurs mains, pour ainsi dire, dégoulinantes du sang du Fils de Dieu ; et pourtant un homme sans instruction, un homme qu'ils détestaient et haïssaient, se leva et prêcha l'Évangile, et trois mille d'entre eux furent immédiatement condamnés et convertis, et devinrent disciples du Seigneur Jésus-Christ.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. (John 14:12)

I used to stumble over that verse, but the longer I live the more I am convinced it is a greater thing to influence a man whose will set against God, to have that will broken and brought into subjection to God’s will—or, in other words, it is a greater thing to have power over a living, sinning, God-hating man, than to quicken the dead. He who could create a world could speak a dead man into life; but I think the greatest miracle this world has ever seen was the miracle at Pentecost.

The men who surrounded the apostles were full of prejudice, full of malice, full of bitterness, their hands, as it were, dripping with the blood of the Son of God; and yet an unlettered man, a man whom they detested and hated, stood up and preached the gospel, and three thousand of them were immediately convicted and converted, and became disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
