Faire du bien

Refuser de faire du bien à ceux à qui il est dû, alors qu'il est en ton pouvoir de le faire. (Proverbes 3:27)

Après l'incendie de Chicago, je suis venu à New York pour de l'argent, et j'ai entendu dire qu'il y avait un homme riche à Fall River qui était très libéral. Je suis donc allé le voir. Il m'a donné un chèque d'un montant important, puis il est monté dans sa voiture et a conduit avec moi jusqu'aux maisons d'autres hommes riches de la ville, et ils m'ont tous donné des chèques. Quand il m'a laissé au train, j'ai saisi sa main et j'ai dit : 

"Si jamais vous venez à Chicago, appelez-moi, et je vous rendrai la pareille."

Il m'a répondu : "M. Moody, ne m'attendez pas ; faites-le au premier homme qui se présentera."

Je n'ai jamais oublié cette remarque ; elle avait la consonance du vrai bon samaritain.

After the Chicago fire I came to New York for money, and I heard there was a rich man in Fall River who was very liberal. So I went to him. He gave me a check for a large amount, and then got into his carriage and drove with me to the houses of other rich men in the city, and they all gave me checks. When he left me at the train I grasped his hand and said:

"If you ever come to Chicago, call on me, and I will return your favor."

He said: "Mr. Moody, don’t wait for me; do it to the first man that comes along."

I never forgot that remark; it had the ring of the true good Samaritan.
